Sarcasm and Whimsy

Life shouldn't be a trek to the grave with the idea of arriving safely in a nice, well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, whiskey & chocolate in hand, body used up, worn out & screaming, "WOO! WHAT A RIDE!"

Beta-hemolytic strep November 22, 2011

We went to see the surgeon with the greatest bedside manner ever yesterday. He said Phil’s abscess hadn’t been drained properly. As he was numbing up the area with lidocaine (ouch!), he told Phil it was the bad, bad, bad kind of strep. I asked what that meant, and he said it was beta-hemolytic strep, also known as the flesh eating strep. Yeah.

OK: FAQs about this before pics.

1. How did Phil get this bug?
Doc says everyone carries strep around. We come in contact with it every day. Phil was just “lucky” enough for it to come in contact with an open wound, where conditions were right for it to fester into this nightmare.

2. How did Phil get this wound to begin with?
Despite Phil’s “rescuing orphans from a swamp” story, we have no idea. Maybe it was a mosquito bite. Maybe he got kicked during soccer. We just don’t know.

3. What about a spider bite/bee sting/infectious worm?
Nope. Doc said that couldn’t cause this. He did dig around, and trust me – I watched – there was nothing in there.

4. What’s next?
He’s still on the IV antibiotics. We’re going to stay the course with this, adding in daily wound care from home health – that’s gonna hurt.

5. Long term?
Doc says we “dodged a bullet.” Phil’s leg got “chewed up a little” by the strep, but it was all caught in time, so there should be no lasting effects. I predict a scar from where he got cut on today, but Doc thinks it will heal up without scarring.

OK. Without further delay, here are the pictures.
